SMD vs Through Hole AV Socket, Mounting Methods and Production Advantages

Differences between surface mount and plug-in audio video sockets for PCB assembly

Audio and video sockets are divided into SMD surface mount and through-hole plug-in types according to PCB mounting technology. Choosing the correct mounting style directly affects production efficiency, product stability and assembly cost for electronic manufacturers.

SMD AV sockets have flat and compact structure without plug-in pins. They are suitable for high-speed SMT automated assembly lines. Surface mount design saves PCB space, helps equipment miniaturization, and is widely used in lightweight consumer electronics. SMD audio jacks feature neat welding and low failure rate in mass production.

Through-hole audio video sockets adopt vertical or horizontal pin structure. The pins penetrate the circuit board and are soldered firmly. This mounting method provides stronger shock resistance and vibration resistance. Plug-in sockets are more suitable for large speakers, fixed audio equipment and industrial multimedia devices that require high connection stability.

Manufacturers can select mounting types according to product positioning. Portable thin devices prioritize SMD sockets, while heavy-duty and professional audio equipment prefer durable through-hole AV connectors.
