Rocker Switch Classification: Pole & Throw Types, Appearance and Mount Options
Complete classification guide for SPST, SPDT, DPST, DPDT rocker switches and variant designs
Rocker switches have multiple classification standards based on circuit configuration, actuator style, indicator light and mounting method. Understanding these categories helps engineers and buyers select the correct model for PCB design and panel assembly.
Classified by contact configuration, four mainstream types dominate the market. SPST (Single Pole Single Throw) handles simple on/off control for one circuit. SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) switches one input between two output paths. DPST (Double Pole Single Throw) simultaneously opens or closes two separate circuits. DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) controls two circuits with two switch states for complex signal switching.
Rocker switches also vary in actuator shape, including round, square, rectangular and oval styles. Buttons come in black, white, red, green and blue. Users can choose illuminated models with built-in indicator lights or standard non-illuminated versions. For assembly, there are SMD surface mount, through-hole and screw terminal types to fit different production processes.
Different classifications match different project needs. Simple household appliances often use SPST rocker switches, while equipment requiring circuit switching usually selects DPDT types. Illuminated variants help operators identify power status at a glance on control panels.
